What is the difference?
- Dedicated: It is exactly what it sounds like. A Symmetrical circuit provisioned specifically for each client. This circuit is essential for net-centric businesses that rely on a stable internet. These services come with a much higher SLA (service level agreement), support, and redundancy within the network infrastructure. A dedicated circuit can be provisioned as type I (on-net) or type II (off-net). On-net is usually more cost effective because the carrier has fiber directly into the location. Off-net means that the provider is using a *hand off* or last mile piece to get to the primary carriers network, and an additional cost is added. Off-net can also mean the carrier is NOT using the last mile network to any degree. However, we are able to assess and provide build costs to deliver the service to you.
- Broadband: (Usually thru a cable provider) is an Asymmetrical connection. This means that the upload and download speeds are different. Typically you will see this speed listed at 50/5 or 100/10. This means 50Mbps of download and 5Mbps of upload. This circuit is SHARED with many other users and therefore the throughput (bandwidth) is not reliable. Many folks think they are paying for 50Mbps of download, and that they are getting it, however, in actuality if you look at your contract the speed is stated as “up to 50Mbps”. That means at any given time you may or may not get that. This type of circuit is fine for small businesses that don’t rely heavily on internet. Don’t not run VOIP or video conferencing over this type of service.
